Average number of years a newborn would live if current mortality patterns held constant.
Expected years of schooling
Years of schooling a child entering school today could expect to receive, given current enrollment patterns.
Mean years of schooling
Average number of years of education actually completed by adults aged 25 and older.
Gross national income per capita
Average income per person, in constant 2021 PPP dollars — comparable across countries and years.
Inequality-adjusted HDI
HDI discounted for inequality in the distribution of health, education, and income within the country.
Gender Development Index
Ratio of female to male HDI — 1.0 means parity; below 1.0 means women's human development lags men's.
Gender Inequality Index
Gender-based disadvantage in reproductive health, empowerment, and labour markets — 0 is parity, 1 is total inequality.
Planetary pressures-adjusted HDI
HDI discounted for a country's carbon emissions and material footprint.
Maternal mortality ratio
Deaths from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes per 100,000 live births.
Adolescent birth rate
Births per 1,000 women aged 15–19.
Female labour force participation
Share of working-age women who are employed or looking for work.
Male labour force participation
Share of working-age men who are employed or looking for work.
Female secondary education attainment
Share of women aged 25+ who have completed at least some secondary education.
Male secondary education attainment
Share of men aged 25+ who have completed at least some secondary education.
Women's share of parliamentary seats
Share of seats in the national parliament held by women.
CO2 production emissions per capita
Carbon dioxide emissions from production activities within the country, per person, in tonnes.
